It was the 1980’s, and Perth, Australia’s Hamilton Hill suburb was no place for the weak hearted. Its streets were no place for a kid to grow up. Laying beneath the surface of the squeaky clean pop sounds coming from INXS and Kylie Minogue was the foundation of a band who knew that their only chance to escape the ghettos of Perth was to smoke, hump, and sing their way to the top. And thus, the Gunja Brothers were born.
Their undying passion for reggae, together with limitless inspiration bestowed upon them by Jah Jah’s sacred herb, the Brothers began a musical journey that took them from the streets of Hammy Hill to the streets of Busselton and beyond. In 2008, after an ill-fated attempt in the studio was derailed by the Brothers spending too much time eating BBQ shrimp and trying to roll the perfect cone, they thought
their dream may go up in smoke.
But in 2010 the Gunja Brothers were reborn from the ashes of these dreams and their love of punanni, keybangathons, barnseys, goon, and all things green shall be fulfilled, with their first release coming out on Permanent Damage Records.
