Fabio Scalabroni – Spherical Harmonics
Ah! Let’s take a moment to enjoy the finer things in life: Cuban cigars; sports cars; thoroughbred horses; curry goat. And now, from the land that introduced the world to pizza, the espresso machine, and the DaVinci Code we present Scalabroni’s EP, Spherical Harmonics.
Staying true to the masters before him, Scalabroni uses analog gear to create some of the deepest dubby techno since the days of Basic Channel, while at the same time sounding relevant on today’s dance floors. His knowledge and respect of classic techno, along with a reputation as one of Italy’s most respected DJs is on display in this four track beauty.
Spherical Harmonics begins with the title track. Starting with spacey chords and a persistent kick, the song slowly builds, adding a pulsing bass, sparse hi-hats and percussion, all in a warm bath of reverb and delay.
Moving on to “Freak Vibes”, the EP’s most upbeat number, Scalabroni shows his penchant for tech-house that makes people move. With congas, a grooving bassline, and relentless drive, this track is a four-on-the floor banger.
“Bradipo’s Dub” takes us back to deep-space territory, with eerily filtered drums, minimal clicks and blips, and Scalabroni’s signature dub vibe.
Closing out the EP is “Polyphasic Sleeper”, a deep and DJ-friendly track that will keep things moving underground long after the sun has risen above. This is dirty dub in the best way.

BEATS AND BEYOND
One cannot help but notice that as you progress through these songs that he also has a keen sense of the future of techno…….If there were one warning, one disclaimer that I’d offer to a first time listener, it would be simple. Be prepared to put this album on repeat. ….

Comments: Polyphasic Sleeper, Bradipo’s Dub and Spherical Harmonics all take me back to the mid- 90′s sounds of Basic Channel and quarky grooves which resemble the likes of Monolake, which are all great settings for a variety of moods. Freak Vibes fails to disappoint as well with its punching percussive club feel. This release will definitely do well with Listeners, Dancers and DJs alike. The soundscapes of these tunes mesh with the clarity of each neverending groove. Very much appreciated here. Quality with its feet buried in its roots! Peace – Altroy.
