The Love Theme releases debut EP on May 11, 2010

With his take on love in the 21st century, Platinum-selling producer and composer Dominic Owen’s first EP under alter ego The Love Theme hits the stores May 11 on Permanent Damage Records.

A modern troubadour’s tale, One examines the themes of forbidden romance, courtship, sex, and procreation. Gone are the days of sappy guitar serenades played on one knee. In the future, producers will tell love songs with drum machines, loops, and samples. With this release of The Love Theme, that future is now.

One is the first of four EPs in a series, to be capped off by a full-length album. Vast in scale and stretching both musical and cultural boundaries, The Love Theme is perhaps Dominic’s most ambitious work to date.

Known best for his work with The Notorious B.I.G., Notty Culture, and Charlie Sloth, Dominic’s genre-defying work as The Love Theme shows yet another side of this influential and prolific producer.

The opening track, “Indian Girl,” ties western string arrangements together with classical Indian vocals using breakbeats and examines attraction in a world where old and new values can clash. “Indian Girl” will also be released as a video, shot and directed by Charlie Sloth, host and star of Being Charlie Sloth.

Attraction becomes courtship in “Johnny Promise,” a Latin-American influenced piece that starts at a simmer and boils over into an extraterrestrial tango that explores love in the internet age, where nobody is exactly as they seem.
“Timbo” is the literal and metaphorical climax of the EP, an orgasmic tongue-in-cheek reference to giant wood. Of course, actions have consequences, and the closing number, “2116” brings the EP back to earth while juxtaposing man’s desire to explore space with the sperm’s instinctive search for a home.

In this and in future releases, The Love Theme keeps the listener engaged with its mature and fun take on life in the age of technology, and is supported by videos, guest appearances and bizarre artwork.

Very different with some sort of love addiction with past and future developments. Love the space vocal input. Like watching a dated Bond movie, it all falls into place.

….yes, yes, yes, great track and video..best I’ve seen in ages.

I do like the tracks, really nice songs and productions!

One is the first in a 4 series set of ep’s from producer Dominic Owen. This is tasty stuff, as you’d expect from someone who’s known better as part of Knotty Culture.

Indian Girl starts things up with a swinging sampled break, vocal cutting and warm bassline reminiscent of early transglobal underground, but with a much warmer production and a bit more funk.

Johnny Promise drops a backpack drum loop on us with latin percussion and swing.

I expect to hear Timbo, the third track, on CSI Nottingham soon. It’s got that sort of Justin Robertson/Lionrock breakbeat groove to it. If you ever listened to early Big Bud, then this will bring back those sounds to you as well. It’s got a ‘pop’ simplicity to it without being, well, too simple.

2116 rounds it all off with a slew of astronaut samples and more chopped beats and warm atmospherics.

There is a concept behind the tracks, ep and series, but to be honest I don’t think you lose anything from not knowing, and making up your own.
